As bushfires continue to affect Victorian communities, Disaster Legal Help Victoria is calling for lawyers to volunteer their time and expertise to support people to get back on their feet.
Disaster Legal Help Victoria is a partnership between Victoria Legal Aid, the Law Institute of Victoria, the Federation of Community Legal Centres, the Victorian Bar and Justice Connect. Together these organisations are co-ordinating the legal response to the Victorian bushfire crisis.
It is likely the legal response will need to continue for months as people become aware of their legal problems and seek help.
Expressions of interest are now open for Victorian lawyers who are interested in volunteering, and from legal practices interested in registering to undertake pro bono work to help those affected.
Lawyers who volunteer may be called on over the coming weeks and months to visit the impacted towns and areas to provide on-the-ground assistance.
We are particularly interested in hearing from:
- lawyers based in Gippsland and North East Victoria
- lawyers with experience in insurance, credit and debt, tenancy and accommodation and other disaster legal issues.
